We are offering a Goberg hand wrought iron single candlestick with a castellated drip cup and a wirework base. The candlestick is 9.75 inches tall and the base is 5.625 inches in diameter. It is typical of Goberg's work consisting of different pieces of ironwork that were often hand hammered and then assembled into finished items. We have carried candlesticks with the castellated drip cup and other candlesticks with the wirework base. In this case Goberg has combined both styles into a single candlestick all attached to a barley twist iron stick. The surface of the piece has been covered with a layer of dark varnish that in some places almost appears to be black paint. There is some oxidation on the surface of the piece, although it is minimal given the age. The base is hammered iron banding that is riveted and then decorated with coiled wirework. The piece has a wonderful look to it that will definitely attract attention and comments if displayed on a side board or table. It is stamped “Germany” on the underside of the base. Goberg's work was never signed consistently the same way each time. Sometimes it was signed with "Germany", sometimes with "Goberg", and sometimes with nothing at all. This piece is definitely his and has all of the characteristics of Goberg items. We have sold similar pieces to this one over the years that were not signed at all.

Known primarily for his hammered iron pieces, Goberg (Hugo Berger) is best known for his wide ranging variety of candlesticks. Besides being considered a metal fabricator of the Arts & Crafts era, Goberg is also closely associated with the German Jugendstil or Secessionist movements of the same time period. Much of his work was sold through Liberty of London with pieces occasionally working their way to the U.S.
