We are offering a pair of Goberg hand wrought iron single candle wall sconces each crowned with a Viking ship. Each piece measures about 8 inches long and is 4.75 inches wide. When hung on the wall they each extend about 3.25 inches from the wall surface. The candle cup on each piece is anchored to an S-curve fixed armature. The ironwork has very nice random dimpling of the iron shield backing pieces and hammered detailing on the Viking ships. The surface of each piece is painted black, both front and back. There is some minor paint loss on both pieces that allows some of the iron underneath to show through. The paint has developed a nice patina over the years. There is some greenish powdery oxidation that appears discretely on some locations on the front and back. Both pieces are signed with “Germany” with “HBV” in a shield. This is a signature that was used by Goberg on some of his later work at a time when he also ran another shop under the name of “Rasper.” These pieces are definitely his and have all of the characteristics of Goberg items. We have had a number of sconces from Goberg over the years with the Viking motif, but never with this specific design.
Known primarily for his hammered iron pieces, Goberg (HuGO BERGer) is best known for his wide ranging variety of candlesticks. Besides being considered a metal fabricator of the Arts & Crafts era, Goberg is also closely associated with the German Jugendstil or Secessionist movements of the same time period. Much of his work was sold through Liberty of London with pieces occasionally working their way to the U.S.
