Sweetpea Cottage is offering this very rare Jugendstil era hand wrought iron three candlestick wall sconce with a brass Viking ship motif made by Hugo Berger (Working as Goberg) in Germany during the early 1900's.
This three stick sconce is an example of one of Goberg's rarest and most sought after items and has become highly desirable over the years. It is quite heavy and is hand-crafted from hammered iron. In the center of the piece there is a Viking ship stamped out of a sheet of brass. The sconce stands 12 3/8 inches tall and is 10 5/8 inches wide. The piece extends about 6 inches out from the wall. The condition is excellent with all the metalwork being sound. Each candle cup is well attached and unbent. The brass ship is also well attached and in very good condition. There are a few hammer marks on the bottom of the ship where it was attached to the sconce during manufacture. Goberg used three different surfaces on his work. He would frequently varnish the metal to slow oxidation and occasionally he would leave the metal completely bare. On some pieces he would apply a layer of black paint. This paint is usually chipped and worn off. The sconce listed here has the black paint in better than average condition. There is some minor chipping along with a few scratches and rust spots, and some crackling, but overall it is very nice. The vast majority of the paint is present and it carries a wonderful matte patina. There are a few very small areas of oxidation distributed randomly on the piece. On the backside of the mounting strap it is signed "Made in Germany." It is definitely a Goberg piece identified by the brass Viking ship which was one of his classic motifs. The fact that this piece has the paint and the brass work makes it very special. You will love having this on the wall of your den and it is guaranteed to start many conversations. You will be absolutely thrilled to call this piece your own. Jugendstil was the German component of the Arts and Crafts movement that was so popular worldwide. Much of Hugo Berger's work was sold by Liberty of London. Occasionally his works would eventually reach the U.S.
