This is a three-stick candelabra done by Hugo Berger, working as Goberg. It dates from around 1910. The piece is 12 3/4 inches tall and is 9 3/4 inches wide. The circular base is 5 ½ inches in diameter. The solid brass Viking ship centerpiece is very unusual and sets this candelabra apart from most other pieces. The piece is very heavy and, other than the Viking ship, is made from hammered iron. The stem is a hammered rod of iron that is riveted to the base. The top half of the piece that consists of the iron arms is screwed onto the base and can easily be unscrewed for removal and easy storage. Each candle cup is attached with a clinched rivet. There is some residual melted wax in some of the cups along with a few drips on the base. The piece retains the majority of the original decorative black paint. There are some spots where the paint has rubbed off. The rivet that holds the stem on the base has loosened ever so slightly so that it twists a very small amount. This has not weakened the construction of the piece, at all. The surface has a nice patina with very little rust. The brass ship has a wonderful patina. On the underside it is stamped "Goberg” and “Germany”. You will love to put this candelabra on display and use it for ambiance at your next event. It would look terrific on a Stickley table or sideboard as well as on a piece of Molesworth furniture in your ranch house. With the Nordic motif it would go beautifully with one of our Sweetpea Cottage hand-made Norwegian style boxes.
Here is your chance to pick up a rare piece of Goberg hand-wrought ironwork. Hugo Berger worked in Germany during the early 1900's and was the epitome of the Jugendstil, or Secessionist, artist, the German equivalent of the Arts and Crafts movement that was so popular worldwide. Most of his work was sold throughout Europe with quite a few pieces being sold by Liberty’s of London. Very few of his pieces made it to the U.S. In recent years they have all become quite scarce. Sweetpea Cottage is the largest dealer in Goberg pieces on the internet!
