Known primarily for his hammered iron pieces, Goberg (Hugo Berger) is best known for his wide ranging variety of candlesticks. Besides being considered a metal fabricator of the Arts & Crafts era, Goberg is also closely associated with the German Jugendstil or Secessionist movements of the same time frame. Much of his work was sold by Liberty of London. Occasionally his works would eventually reach the U.S.
What we are offering here is a monumental example of Goberg's work, a fine seven stick candelabra that has been decorated with a curly-cue motif. Typical of Goberg's work this piece shows the hand hammered designs and texture for which he is so well known. Overall the piece is in excellent condition. Goberg often applied a layer of varnish to the surface to achieve a specific look and slow down the rate of oxidation of the iron surface. This candelabra has the varnish surface and it is mostly intact with only some minor areas of oxidation primarily on the base and the candle cups. There is a wonderful patina that covers the whole surface and that can only come with age. The metalwork is still sound with no loosening of the joints. It sits well and looks great on a table. Because the arms of the candle cups are made of small diameter iron rods, the piece has a much lighter appearance than is usually associated with Goberg's work. This is a unique deviation from his norm. In addition, the knurled tubular stem also adds an interesting look that again helps to lighten the look of the piece. Each of the two longest candle arms has a hole in it which might have been intended to have something hanging from it. We have a smaller candelabra similar to this one that has two hearts hanging from holes. There is no evidence that these holes were ever used on this piece. The piece is signed with "Germany". It is definitely a Goberg item, even though his signature is lacking. It has all of the standard Goberg characteristics present and we have handled pieces that were identical to this one and were signed. Goberg is well known for the inconsistency of signing and not signing his The total height is about 10 ½ inches and it is 21 ½ inches across all seven candle cups. The circular base is about 5 inches in diameter. Rest assured that wherever you put this beauty with candles in place it is bound to show well and draw many great looks and comments.
