This is one of the more rare Goberg chambersticks. Its compact design and Arts and Crafts styling make it a very desirable and useful piece. It stands 5.25 inches tall and the base is 4.25 inches in diameter. The sturdy iron handle extends out about 2 inches. The condition of this item is well above average. There is the usual minor oxidation that would be expected on a piece of iron that is over 100 years old. The candle cup is well attached but rotates on its clinched rivet. It has wonderful hammer marks from the working of the metal. The rivet caps have remnants of the original red paint that Goberg occasionally used as accents on his work. The paint, alone, makes this a very scarce item. In all of our years of handling Goberg items we have only handled a very small number of pieces with the red paint. The Grove Park Inn in Asheville, North Carolina has a piece on display in its Arts and Crafts cases that matches this item but theirs lacks the red paint.
Known primarily for his hammered iron pieces, Hugo Berger who worked under the name of Goberg is best known for his wide ranging variety of candlesticks. Besides being considered a metal fabricator of the Arts & Crafts era, Goberg is also closely associated with the German Jugendstil or Secessionist movement of the same time frame. Much of his work was sold at Liberty of London with an occasional piece finding its way to the U.S. We search far and wide to find Goberg items to satisfy our growing clientele. Sweetpea Cottage is one of the largest dealers in Goberg items that you will find on the internet. In recent years his pieces have become harder and harder to find. So when you see something you like you should grab it.
In the graphic style of Jugendstil/Arts and Crafts, this is a wonderful item that is both artistic and useful. Sitting on a desk or shelf, it will capture everybody's attention. It can also be used to light your way on a cold night when the electricity is out. You can shop with confidence at Sweetpea Cottage. YOUR SATISFACTION IS GUARANTEED.
