We are offering a fine and extremely rare example of a Goberg chamberstick, or single candlestick, with a handle and matchbox holder. It is designed to be carried using the handle. This candlestick is a bit unusual because it has the matchbox holder affixed to the base, something which was not always done on Goberg’s chambersticks. What makes this piece most rare is the black paint with red accent paint. It presents a striking and bold look. Unfortunately, over the years most of the pieces done with the red and black paint have bee cleaned and buffed to the point where the red paint has been all removed. As a result this piece is a rare survivor. Typical of Goberg's work this piece shows the hand hammered designs and texture for which he is so well known. It is made with very heavy gauge iron indicating that it is one of his earlier pieces. Overall the condition is in better than average. It has some very minor oxidation which is usually expected on old iron work along with some loss of both the red and black paint. Still the vast majority of original paint is still there. A wonderful soft semi-gloss patina covers the surface that can only come with age. The metalwork is sound with no loosening of the joints. It has a very commanding look when sitting on a table. The piece is signed "Germany", and is definitely a Goberg piece. We have sold several other chambersticks that were identical to this one that had the Goberg signature. Goberg was always inconsistent about what he signed and did not sign. The total height is about 7.25 inches and the circular base is about 5.5 inches in diameter. Rest assured that wherever you put this wonderful chamberstick with a candle in place it is bound to show well and draw many great looks and comments.
Known primarily for his hammered iron pieces, Goberg (Hugo Berger) is best known for his wide ranging variety of candlesticks. Besides being considered a metal fabricator of the Arts & Crafts era, Goberg is also closely associated with the German Jugendstil or Secessionist movement of the same time frame. Much of his work was sold at Liberty of London with an occasional piece finding its way to the U.S.
