This is a very nice pair of Goberg candlesticks made with broad sturdy bases and with stems made from twisted iron bars. Each piece measures 8.25 inches tall by 5.125 inches wide at the widest point of the base. They are in original condition showing the normal wear and oxidation that is associated with antique hand hammered ironwork. The surfaces still show much of the original varnish that was applied in the Goberg studio. The varnish has yellowed slightly over the years creating a nice patina. The clinched rivet construction has kept each piece solid. Both drip cups have very slight wavers to the edges which is a result of years of use. Each of them is stamped “Germany” underneath the base. Rest assured that wherever you put these beautiful pieces with a candle in place they are bound to show well and draw many great looks and comments.
Known primarily for his hammered iron pieces, Goberg (Hugo Berger) is best known for his wide ranging variety of candlesticks. Besides being considered a metal fabricator of the Arts & Crafts era, Goberg is also closely associated with the German Jugendstil or Secessionist movement of the same time frame. Much of his work was sold at Liberty of London with an occasional piece finding its way to the U.S.
