We are offering a signed piece from the shops of Goberg that is made from solid brass. It is a combination match holder and candlestick done in the form of a delightful pig including a curly tail and a ring in its nose. It stands 5 3/8 inches tall, is a maximum of about 5 1/4 inches long, and the base is a maximum of 3 inches wide. On the front side of the pig there is a spot for holding a box of matches while on the upper part of the pig there is a candle cup ready to be use. Overall, the condition is fine. It was polished at one time (not by us) and carries wonderful brass color. There are the usual small scratches from age on the brass surface and some minor oxidation where some of the brass pieces were soldered together. It is a nice item with a great look. It is signed on the underside with a stamped "Goberg" and "ges. gesch." which basically indicates that it is patented. As a display piece it shows very well with its marvelous luster, yet it can also be used for its original purpose if you choose.
Sweetpea Cottage continues to beat the bushes looking for the unique and rare pieces of metal work done by Goberg. Known primarily for his hammered iron pieces, Goberg (Hugo Berger) also dabbled successfully in brass, making some very rare and highly sought-after items. Besides being considered a metal-fabricator of the Arts & Crafts era, Goberg is also closely associated with the German Jugendstil or Secessionist movement of the same time frame.
