This is a nice, lined cigar box made by Hugo Berger, working as Goberg during the days prior to World War I. Although originally intended to be a cigar box, it would make a wonderful desk box, jewelry box, or dresser box. It measures 8 3/4 inches long, 5 ½ inches wide, and 3 ¼ inches tall. The box is made from iron that has an owl design with brass accents skillfully applied to the lid. The box has a wood lining on the inside. The piece is in good condition with typical minor abrasions, oxidation, and the usual dings found in early metalwork. The back right lid corner is crinkled a bit, probably as a result of being dropped at one time. We have photographed the box to include the damage. The box is structurally solid. The hinges and lid work smoothly to open and close as intended. Although the box is not signed, it is definitely a Goberg piece. It is unusual to find a Goberg box of this type with the owl design. This piece is quite rare and would be wonderful as a storage container for anything that you desire. If you are so inclined it would make a great stash box. It would look wonderful sitting on your desk. If you collect Goberg items, then this is an important piece for your collection.

Known primarily for his hammered iron pieces, Goberg (Hugo Berger) is best known for his wide-ranging variety of candlesticks and smoking items. Besides being considered a metal fabricator of the Arts & Crafts era, Goberg is also closely associated with the German Jugendstil or Secessionist movement of the same time period. Much of his work was sold at Liberty's of London with an occasional piece finding its way to the U.S. His owl pieces are highly desirable and becoming more and more scarce.
