We are offering a wonderful example of Goberg's work, a pair (2) of rare three stick candelabras that have each been decorated with an inset figure of a perched owl. This owl has become known as one of Goberg’s signature pieces over the years, and when one comes to market it is usually snapped up fast. Having a matched set of two owl candelabras is extremely rare. Each of the owls has brass eyes and a brass beak which helps to enhance the character of the bird. Typical of Goberg's work these pieces show the hand hammered design, structural elements, and texture for which he is so well known. Because of the hand-made nature of the pieces there will always be small variations in their size and construction, with different aspects of the pieces not always being perfectly straight.

Overall the pieces are in good condition. They both have a heavy brown-black applied finish which is created by a thick layer of varnish that is original to the items. This is one of the rarer surfaces that Goberg used and it adds a wonderful rich quality to the candelabras. There is some scattered oxidation (rust) which is usually expected on old iron work along with stray candle wax. In addition, there are the usual dings and scratches that are associated with antique items such as these. One of the pieces has several bent rims on the candle cups which is most likely a result of having fallen over at one time. In addition, the owl on that piece is slightly loose so that it rocks a little on the rivet used to hold it in place. We have deliberately photographed it with the owl pushed to one side. With no effort at all it can be re-centered back to where it belongs in the middle of the piece by simply lightly pushing it. This piece is signed with “Goberg”. The other candelabra does not have the bent rims on the candle cups. The owl is also solid. The second candelabra is signed “Germany”. Each piece has a wonderful patina that covers the whole surface and only comes with time. The metalwork is solid. Several of the candlecups will rotate on the rivets used to assemble them. This is normal and has not impacted on the integrity of the pieces. This is a nice matched set that will look good in any classic arts and crafts setting. They both sit well and look great on a table or piece of Stickley furniture. Each piece is about 13 ¼ inches tall. One is 7 ¼ inches across and the other is 7 inches across. The circular bases are each about 4 3/4 inches in diameter. Rest assured that wherever you put this wonderful set with candles in place they are bound to show well and will draw many great comments.

Known primarily for his hammered iron pieces, Goberg (Hugo Berger) is best known for his wide-ranging variety of candlesticks and candelabras. Besides being considered a metal fabricator of the Arts & Crafts era, Goberg is also closely associated with the German Jugendstil or Secessionist movement of the same time frame. Much of his work was sold through Liberty’s of London.
