Sweetpea Cottage is offering this marvelous Jugendstil Owl Desk Clip, made by Hugo Berger, Working as Goberg, in Germany during the early 1900's. The piece is made from a combination of hand hammered iron and brass. The back and the body of the owl are hammered iron while the applied eyes and beak are brass. The piece is 5 3/8 inches long and 2 3/4 inches wide. The owl is 4 1/2 inches long and 2 1/4 inches wide. The owl is on a spring clip that works smoothly and allows it to still function well in its intended purpose as a paper clip. There is a keyhole cut into the back that will allow you to hang it on a wall if you choose. The condition is excellent. It has been treated with respect over the years. There is some oxidation generally distributed on the piece that is expected on any early item that is made from hammered iron. The oxidation is quite acceptable and is considered to be part of the artistry of Goberg items. The piece is held together firmly with clinched rivets; no glue to eventually fail on this piece! There is an identification stamp for "Goberg" on the back along with "Made in Germany". The Goberg owl has become his signature piece. You will find that we also have his owl on several other items in our inventory. These owls are becoming very difficult to find as they are so special to look at and people value them dearly. When you see this beauty in person, you will understand why. The charm it exudes is wonderful.

Known primarily for his hammered iron pieces, Goberg (Hugo Berger) is best known for his wide ranging variety of candlesticks. Besides being considered a metal fabricator of the Arts & Crafts era, Goberg is also closely associated with the German Jugendstil or Secessionist movement of the same time frame. Jugendstil was the German component of the Arts and Crafts movement that was so popular worldwide. Much of his work was sold at Liberty of London with an occasional piece finding its way to the U.S.

In the style of Jugendstil/Arts and Crafts style, this is a fantastic and rare item. Sitting on a desk or shelf, or hanging on a wall, it will capture everybody's attention.
