Sweetpea Cottage is offering this marvelous Jugendstil era owl desk clip made by Hugo Berger, working as Goberg, in Germany during the early 1900's. The piece is made from a combination of hammered iron and brass. The back of the clip and the body of the owl are hammered iron while the applied eyes and beak are solid brass. The piece is 5 3/8 inches long and 2 3/4 inches wide. The owl is 4 1/2 inches long and 2 1/4 inches wide. The owl is on a spring clip that works smoothly and allows it to still function properly in its intended purpose as a desk clip for holding stacks of paper. A keyhole is cut into the back that will allow you to hang it on a wall if you choose. The condition of the piece is excellent. It has been treated with respect over the years. This piece has a nice layer of applied chemical oxidation on the iron which is original to the piece and provides a beautiful soft reddish-brown color. The look is quite nice. Usually Goberg’s work shows the original bare exposed iron surface. The piece is firmly held together with clinched rivets; no glue or nails to eventually fail! There is an identification stamp for "Germany" on the back. The Goberg owl has become his signature piece. He used it on a variety of objects ranging from candlesticks to matchbox holders. You will find that Sweetpea Cottage also has his owl on several other items in our shop. These owls are becoming very difficult to find as they are so special to look at and people value them dearly. When you see this beauty in person, you will understand why people fall in love with them. The charm it exudes is wonderful.
Known primarily for his hammered iron pieces, Goberg (Hugo Berger) is best known for his wide ranging variety of candlesticks and smoking accessories. Besides being considered a metal fabricator of the Arts & Crafts era, Goberg is also closely associated with the German Jugendstil or Secessionist movement of the same time period. Jugendstil was the German component of the Arts and Crafts movement that was so popular worldwide. Much of his work was sold at Liberty of London with an occasional piece finding its way to the U.S.
