This very scarce piece of signed Goberg ironwork is the only example of this type of box that we have every encountered. It is a solid hammered iron box with a hinged lid and is lined inside with wood. On the top of the lid there is an iron cross, often called a Maltese cross, that is attached with small iron rivets. It the center of the iron cross there is a piece of fabric with a small amount of residual original red paint. The box dates from around 1915. The piece is 4 ¾ inches long, 3 5/8 inches deep, and 1 ½ inches tall. It is hand-crafted from a thick gauge of hammered iron so that, considering its diminutive size, the box is quite heavy. The condition is very good. All the metalwork is solid and the hinges work fine. The surface of the piece has a nice dark patina along with a thin layer of oxidation and a few patches of rust. We have applied a thin coating of conservator’s wax to the whole piece to help preserve the surface and retain the patina and rust. This is a piece that should never be cleaned. The wonderful look that it has took years to develop and would ruin the piece if it were removed. On the underside of the box it is stamped "Goberg". This is a marvelous item with lots of potential uses for storage. With the iron cross on the lid it will be a conversation starter when seen sitting on your desk. You will be absolutely thrilled to call this piece your own.

Here is your chance to pick up a wonderful piece of Goberg hand-wrought ironwork. Hugo Berger, working as Goberg, in Germany during the early 1900's was the epitome of the Jugendstil artist, the German equivalent of the Arts and Crafts movement that was so popular worldwide. Very few of his pieces made it to the U.S. In recent days they have all become quite scarce.
