Sweetpea Cottage is offering this marvelous hand hammered Jugendstil elephant candlestick matchbox holder, made by Hugo Berger (Working as Goberg) in Germany during the early 1900's. Jugendstil was the German component of the Arts and Crafts movement that was so popular worldwide. It is made with an elephant profile cut from sheet steel, hand hammered for details, and then attached by rivets to a sheet steel base. The piece stands 8 1/4 inches tall, is 5 ½ inches long, and is 3 ½ inches wide to the extreme outer edges. The elephant is the profile that Goberg used on a variety of items including book ends, ashtrays, and candlesticks. All of these pieces are very scarce. This ashtray retains its original varnished surface almost completely intact. The color of the varnish has darkened over the years so that it appears as if the piece is bronze. It is definitely iron! The piece is solid with the rivets firmly holding the piece together. There are a small number of areas of oxidation, but they add to the wonderful patina of the piece. In our opinion the condition of this item is excellent. It is possible to occasionally run into Goberg’s owl motif, but Goberg elephants are quite rare. The underside of the base is stamped “Goberg”and on the side of the elephant there is a stamp “Made in Germany”. This item will add a marvelous touch to a desk or any other surface that you use for display purposes.

Known primarily for his hammered iron pieces, Goberg (Hugo Berger) is best known for his wide ranging variety of candlesticks and smoking accessories. Besides being considered a metal fabricator of the Arts & Crafts era, Goberg is also closely associated with the German Jugendstil or Secessionist movement of the same time period. Jugendstil was the German component of the Arts and Crafts movement that was so popular worldwide. Much of his work was sold at Liberty of London with an occasional piece finding its way to the U.S.

In the graphic style of Jugendstil/Arts and Crafts, this is a fantastic and rare item. Sitting on a desk or shelf, it will capture everybody’s attention.
