Goberg Jugendstil Elephant Ashtray, Hand Hammered, Germany, Ca. 1910
We are offering a Goberg ashtray which is made with an elephant profile cut from sheet steel, hand hammered for details, and then attached by rivets to a sheet steel base. The piece stands 6 1/2 inches tall, is 5 ½ inches long, and is 4 7/8 inches wide to the extreme outer edges. Sweetpea Cottage is offering this marvelous hand hammered Jugendstil elephant ashtray, made by Hugo Berger (Working as Goberg) in Germany during the early 1900's. Jugendstil was the German component of the Arts and Crafts movement that was so popular worldwide. The elephant is very similar to the profiles found on two Goberg bookends which Sweetpea Cottage also has for sale. The one significant difference is that this ashtray retains its original black paint which was put on some pieces of work done by Goberg. The piece is solid with the rivets well anchored holding the piece together firmly. As would be expected from a used item such as this, the paint is chipped off in places, especially on the ashtray bowl and the majority of paint is missing from the underside. Most of the paint on the elephant is still bright and fresh. There are a small number of areas of oxidation, but they add to the wonderful patina of the piece. In our opinion the condition of this item is excellent. The signs of use add to the character of the piece and do not detract. It is possible to occasionally run into Goberg's owl motif, but Goberg elephants are quite rare. The base is stamped "Germany". While there is no Goberg stamp on this item (His pieces were often not identified with that signature), it is definitely done by him. We have added a photo from the Goberg catalog of 1929 that shows the elephant motif applied to inventory item 7752 with a slightly different ashtray, but definitely the same elephant. This will add a marvelous touch to a desk or any other surface that you use for display purposes.
In the graphic style of Jugendstil/Arts and Crafts, this is a fantastic and rare item. Sitting on a desk or shelf, it will capture everybody's attention.
