Signed Goberg Hand Hammered Iron Decorative Lined Desk Box Humidor, Ca. 1900-10
This hand hammered Goberg signed decorative iron desk box is one of Goberg’s more sought after and desirable pieces. The box measures 10.25 inches long by 7 inches wide by 3.375 inches tall. It sits on four ball feet and has three hemispheric decorative lozenge elements hammered into the lid. There is a faux lock escutcheon on the front along with four decorative elements on the corners where the metal sides have wrapped around to the front and back and been riveted. The lid hinges are still firmly riveted in place and operate smoothly. The surface is in good used condition with the usual minor scratches and dings, but nothing that is distracting. The piece is covered with a nice patina that provides a soft glow. There are a few spots of oxidation (rust) which would be expected from something this old and made from iron. The inside is clean and lined with camphor wood which produces a very fragrant menthol odor when lightly scratched. Whether you use it as a desk box or dresser box, this piece is sure to please you and provide really classy storage space.
Known primarily for his hammered iron pieces, Goberg (Hugo Berger) is best known for his wide ranging variety of candlesticks. Besides being considered a metal fabricator of the Arts & Crafts era, Goberg is also closely associated with the German Jugendstil or Secessionist movement of the same time frame. Much of his work was sold at Liberty of London with an occasional piece finding its way to the U.S.
