Made from solid hand hammered ironwork this candlestick, or chamberstick, is a wonderful example of the work done by Goberg. It stands about 4.375 inches tall and has a round base that is 3.5 inches in diameter. The curved handle protrudes an additional 1.25 inches beyond the base. The metalwork has the dimpled surfaces which were frequently used by Goberg. The piece is in fine condition with a wonderful dark patina and has no damage. It was painted black at one time which was one of the finishes that Goberg often used. At sometime a previous owner removed most of the black paint revealing a wonderful soft metallic look. However, the underside of the base still retains it black surface. The piece has a protective outer finish that was added to prevent further oxidation and retain the existing patina. The construction of the piece is all done with clinched rivets that are still tight so that it is quite solid. It is not signed but is definitely a Goberg item that has his characteristic styling and construction methods. We have had multiple items such as this in the past that did have the Goberg signature. It is rare to have a piece like this in such nice condition as they are frequently bent and badly oxidized. It would make a very nice display piece that could also be used as chamberstick. Imagine it sitting with a candle on an end table in your library or dining room.

Sweetpea Cottage continues to beat the bushes looking for the unique and rare pieces of metal work done by Goberg. Known primarily for his hammered iron pieces, Goberg (HuGO BERGer) also dabbled successfully with brass, making some very rare and highly sought after items. Besides being considered a metal fabricator of the Arts & Crafts era, Goberg is also closely associated with the German Jugendstil or Secessionist movement of the same time frame. His pieces were sold primarily in Europe and at Liberty of London. Very few of his more rare pieces have made it across the pond to the U.S.
