Known primarily for his hammered iron pieces, Goberg (Hugo Berger) is best known for his wide ranging variety of candlesticks. Besides being considered a metal fabricator of the Arts & Crafts era, Goberg is also closely associated with the German Jugendstil or Secessionist movement of the same time frame.
What we are offering here is a wonderful example of Goberg's work, a fine chamberstick, or single candlestick with a handle. It is designed to be carried from location to location using the handle. It also has a place to store a matchbox attached to the base. This component is not often found on this type of chamberstick. Typical of Goberg's work this piece shows the hand hammered designs and texture for which he is so well known. Overall the piece is in good condition. Much of the original black paint that Goberg occasionally used on his iron pieces is still present. It has some oxidation (rust) which is usually expected on old iron work. There is a wonderful patina that covers the whole surface and can only come with age. The metalwork is still sound with no loosening of the joints. It sits well and looks great on a table. The piece is signed "Germany". There is no question, however, about this being a Goberg piece. We have sold several other chambersticks that had the Goberg stamp and were similar to this one. The total height is about 7 inches and the circular base is about 5 ½ inches in diameter. Rest assured that wherever you put this beauty with a candle in place it is bound to show well and draw many great looks and comments.
