This five stick candelabra is an example of one of Goberg's more frequently sought-after items and has become highly desirable over the years. It dates to around 1910. It stands 13 ½ inches tall and is 12 3/4 inches wide. The circular base is 4 3/4 inches in diameter. While all Goberg candelabra's are rare, the five stick candelabrum is much harder to come by than the three stick candelabrum. This piece is quite heavy and is hand-crafted from hammered iron. In the center of the piece there is a wonderful floral motif that culminates with a flower in full bloom. The condition is quite good. All the metalwork is solid. Each candle cup is well attached but several of the bobeches, or candle cups, are slightly bent, or wavy, on their upper rims. At one time somebody made an attempt to straighten them out. This is minor, part of the history of the piece and it does not detract in any way. Also, becomes of the clinched rivet construction of these pieces they very seldom stand perfectly straight. This is also true with this piece. There is some residual melted wax in some of the cups. There is still quite a bit of the original dark brown-black protective varnish covering the piece that Goberg often used to slow oxidation. Because of that, there is great patina and minimal rust. On the underside there is a “Goberg” stamp along with a "Germany" stamp. You will be absolutely thrilled to call this piece your own. This piece looks terrific on a Stickley or other Arts and Crafts table as well as in a Gothic setting.
Here is your chance to pick up a wonderful piece of Goberg hand-wrought ironwork. Hugo Berger, working as Goberg, in Germany during the early 1900's was the epitome of the Jugendstil artist, the German equivalent of the Arts and Crafts movement that was so popular worldwide. Very few of his pieces made it to the U.S. In recent years they have all become quite scarce.
