We are offering one of Goberg’s most highly desired and sought after pieces, a three stick candelabra with a hammered floral element in the center. The candelabra stands 13 3/8 inches tall, is 7 3/8 inches wide, and stands on a round base that is 4 3/4 inches in diameter. This is a very heavy and solid item, made with beefy ½ inch square iron rods that have been bent and riveted together. Goberg made this style of candelabra in four versions, a one candle, a three candle, a five candle and a seven candle version. The balanced look of the three candle piece makes it one of the more popular items for collectors to obtain. This piece is also in excellent condition. The majority of the surface is still the original dark varnish that Goberg used to add some minor color to the piece along with protection from excessive oxidation. This particular candelabra has had a very good life and survived well. This are some very minor signs of use and age. The rims of the candle cups have very slight waviness to them. Other than these minor issues, this is one of the best candelabras of this type that we have ever had in our inventory. The piece is signed “Germany” on the underside of the base. While it lacks the Goberg stamp there is no question that this is a Goberg item. We have had these candlesticks before and some were marked Goberg. He was well known for the inconsistency with which he marked his items. If you are looking for a classic Arts and Crafts piece for your dining room table, then this is something you do not want to miss out on. If condition is everything, then it just does not get any better than this!
Known primarily for his hammered iron pieces, Goberg (Hugo Berger) is best known for his wide ranging variety of candlesticks and smoking accessories. Besides being considered a metal fabricator of the Arts & Crafts era, Goberg is also closely associated with the German Jugendstil or Secessionist movement of the same time period. Jugendstil was the German component of the Arts and Crafts movement that was so popular worldwide. Much of his work was sold at Liberty of London with an occasional piece finding its way to the U.S.
