We are offering a Goberg hand wrought iron single candlestick with snuffer hanging from a chain. The piece is done in a Gothic style with a castellated drip cup around the candle holder. The candlestick is 8 3/8 inches tall and the round base is 4 3/4 inches in diameter. It is typical of Goberg's work consisting of different pieces of ironwork that were often hand hammered and then assembled into finished items. The surface of the piece has been covered with a layer of dark varnish that in some places almost appears to be black paint. There is some minor oxidation on the surface of the piece primarily where the varnish has worn away. The amount of oxidation is minimal for the age. The drip cup and candle cup are in excellent condition with no bends or dings to speak of which is unusual for this type of item. The round base is hammered to have a slight textured design. The piece has a wonderful look that will definitely attract attention and comments if displayed on a side board or table. This piece is signed on the underside of the base with “Germany.” Goberg's work was never signed consistently the same way each time. Sometimes it was signed with "Germany,” sometimes with "Goberg,” and sometimes with nothing at all. This piece is definitely his and has all of the characteristics of Goberg items.

Known primarily for his hammered iron pieces, Goberg (Hugo Berger) is best known for his wide-ranging variety of candlesticks. Besides being considered a metal fabricator of the Arts & Crafts era, Goberg is also closely associated with the German Jugendstil or Secessionist movements of the same time frame. Much of his work was sold through Liberty of London with pieces occasionally working their way to the U.S.
