This is one of the rarer sets of candlesticks from Goberg that we have ever encountered. Each is a single candlestick that has a heraldic symbol, or coat of arms, hanging in the center of each stick. The heraldic symbols are hand painted onto iron disks. Research indicates that the two symbols are the coats of arms for Nuremberg, or Nurnberg, in Germany. Each coat of arms has its own unique interpretation. They are definitely painted by hand, well executed, and conceivably one-of-a-kind pieces.
The two candlesticks each stand about 11 inches tall. They stand on bases that are each 5 inches in diameter. The disks painted with the coats of arms are each 3 ½ inches in diameter. These are wonderful and rare items, some of Goberg’s best work. The candlesticks are made with knurled iron rods attached with rivets to the bases. The top half of each candlestick has a square iron rod that has been bent into a circle that is attached below to the knurled rod and above to the candle cup. Hanging off of each side of the circle are triangular shaped dangles. Both candlesticks are in good shape. The have the usual surface rust to be found on old ironwork along with a great dark patina that developed with age. Both pieces are solid although there is a small amount of wiggle where one of the bases is attached by a rivet to the neck of the candlestick. On the underside of each base it is stamped "Goberg" and “Ges Gesch” which is loosely interpreted as “patent pending”. You will be absolutely thrilled to call these pieces your own. They look terrific no matter how or where you display them. They should probably be in a museum somewhere.
Here is your chance to pick up a wonderful piece of Goberg hand-wrought ironwork. Hugo Berger, working as Goberg, in Germany during the early 1900's was the epitome of the Jugendstil artist, the German equivalent of the Arts and Crafts movement that was so popular worldwide. Very few of his pieces made it to the U.S. In recent years they have all become quite scarce.
