Made from solid brass with a steel cutting blade, this signed piece of Goberg’s work is a rooster cigar cutter. It stands about 4.5 inches tall, is a maximum of about 6.25 inches long, and the base is a maximum of 3.5 inches wide. It is in overall fine condition with no damage to speak of and a wonderful dark brass patina. It might have been polished many years ago based on what looks to be a small amount of residual polish in some of the grooves on the piece, but it has since aged to return to a wonderful patina. On the brass surface there are the usual small scratches and dings from use and some minor spots of green oxidation primarily on the base. It is a nice item with a terrific look. It is signed on the underside with a stamped "Goberg", "ges. gesch", and “Germany.” The rooster head is lifted to open the hole for cutting the cigar. As the head is brought back down it will clip the end of a cigar. The bird figure is firmly riveted to the base. As a display piece it shows very well with its marvelous bronze/brown patina, yet it can also be used for its original purpose if you choose.

Sweetpea Cottage continues to beat the bushes looking for the unique and rare pieces of metal work done by Goberg. Known primarily for his hammered iron pieces, Goberg (HuGO BERGer) also dabbled successfully with brass, making some very rare and highly sought after items. Besides being considered a metal fabricator of the Arts & Crafts era, Goberg is also closely associated with the German Jugendstil or Secessionist movement of the same time frame. His pieces were sold primarily in Europe and at Liberty of London. Very few of his more rare pieces have made it across the pond to the U.S.
