Known primarily for his hammered iron pieces, Goberg (Hugo Berger) also dabbled successfully in brass, making some very rare and highly sought-after items. Besides being considered a metal-fabricator of the Arts & Crafts era, Goberg is also closely associated with the German Jugendstil movement of the same time frame. What we are offering here is one of the most unusual and rarest of signed Goberg pieces that you will ever find. Designed to look like a stag, or possibly a chamois, standing proudly on a mountain slope, this piece serves as a most unusual candlestick with an ashtray and matchbox holder attached. Condition is absolutely wonderful. Overall the brass is clean and bright. However, primarily on the ashtray at the bottom there are several spots where cigars or cigarettes have left burn marks on the brass. Also there is a small 1/4 inch ding in one side of the candlestick cup. It has been polished sometime in the past as evidenced by polish residue left in some of the crevices. We have made no attempt to clean it up or polish it. The total height is about 9 inches, it is 7 ½ inches long and 4 1/4 inches wide. It is held together with crimped brass rivets. As is usually the case they have loosened up slightly over the years so that there is a very small amount of play wherever the rivets have been used. As mentioned before there is no doubt about the origin of the piece as it is strongly stamped with "Goberg Germany" on the underside. Rest assured that wherever you put this beauty with a candle in place it is bound to show well and draw many great looks and comments.
