4th Pennsylvania Cavalry Gettysburg Monument Dedication Program Invitation, 1889
We are offering a nicely preserved copy of the invitation to the program for the dedication of the monument to the 4th Pennsylvania Veteran Cavalry that was held on September 11th and 12th in 1889 at Gettysburg. The monument is located along Hancock Avenue on Cemetery Ridge, right in the middle of where so much heavy fighting took place on July 2nd and 3rd, 1863. The piece is in a two sided frame so that it can be flipped over to see both sides of the program. The paper measures approximately 6.25 by 8 inches and the frame is 8.5 by 10.25 inches. The wood frame looks as if it is walnut and is in good condition. The piece is yellowed with age and shows some occasional foxing. There is very minor staining from an unknown source that is evident on both sides. One photo looks like there is a crack in the glass, but that is not the case. It is actually part of the previously mentioned stain. The piece has not been examined out of the frame. The content lists the committee members responsible for the program, provides a detailed list of the units engagements, and gives statistics and casualties. Regimental headquarters are listed as “Central Hotel, Gettysburg, Pa.”, a place that is now long gone. It is a wonderful piece of paper ephemera that beat the odds and has survived the test of time.
