Here is a nice bentwood pantry box of medium size measuring 9 1/4 inches long, 5 1/4 inches wide and 3 1/4 inches tall. It is definitely hand made and has some age on it. Based on the construction methods and design it is probably dated to the mid 1800's. Although we specialize in Scandinavian bentwood boxes, occasionally we run into an American made pantry box that is simply too good to pass up. As is true of most pantry boxes, it has been used and shows its age with honest wear. Some of the original wooden pegs used in construction have fallen out and in some cases have been replaced with early iron nails. In other places the pegs have not been replaced leaving small holes. The original lacing is still all in place. There are small gaps between the bottom and the sides and the top and the sides. This is typical for boxes like this and is due to shrinkage of the wood over time. There are a number of small cracks and splits to the wood, primarily along the ages. The piece has been carefully decorated with hammered hot poker work that is reminiscent of the style of work done by Norwegians over the years. The wood looks to be pine and it has been covered with a thin layer of varnish that has served to protect the piece well. You will love to have and use this box. It will look great sitting out as a display piece and will also be at home being used as a storage box sitting on a desk or bureau. The uses for the box are limitless and the look of the piece will make it fun to have around.
