Although people often refer to items such as this as “salesman’s samples”, we believe that this is actually a homemade piece crafted lovingly by a father or grandfather for a young girl. Consequently, we are labeling it as a doll wardrobe. The piece stands 12 ½ inches tall, is 9 1/4 inches wide, and 5 ½ inches deep. It is constructed of a combination of maple on the sides and door along with pine on the top, back and shelves. It has been lightly stained to a reddish-brown and then treated with a thin protective coat of varnish. The finish is all original. Construction is done with a combination of nails and brads, as would be expected from somebody scavenging such items out of a junk drawer. Many of the brad and nail heads are square, indicating substantial age to the piece. Inside there are two fixed shelves that are faced with bead board. The back is made with unfinished tongue and groove paneling. There is a wooden turn lock to keep the door closed.
Overall, the piece is in wonderful condition that is consistent with age and use. Structurally, it is solid. There is a 3/4 inch chip missing from the left front part of the top that can easily be seen in the photos. The surface has the usual scrapes, dings, and scratches associated with an old finish. There is a 1 inch split at the bottom on the right side where a square brad split the wood when it was being made. All in all, it is a beautiful survivor with a wonderful look and great patina.
