Chip carving fans are going to love this mahogany box that has a chip carved and painted design. The piece dates from the late 1800's. It could be used as a dresser box, keepsake box, or even a jewelry box. It measures 10.5 inches long by 6.625 inches wide and stands 3.5 inches tall. The hinged lid has a variety of chip carved painted elements including a circular compass design in the center and quarter circle elements at each corner. There is a running chip carved V-motif painted in red and white that runs around all four sides. The construction uses butt joined corners that are strengthened with square brads. The bottom is attached with square brads and the hinges are home made. It is in good condition. There are the usual chips and abrasions that are consistent with age. There is a check in the back side that is approximately 0.75 inches long and originates in an old knot in the wood. Both the lid and the bottom have very slight warps. The warp in the bottom has lifted a corner about 1/16th inch away from the side. The warp in the lid is barely noticeable due to the offset in the homemade hinges. The paint colors are muted, but we suspect that they were always like that. There is a small screw hole in the front of the lid and another just below it on the front side. This suggests that there might have been a hook and eye latch at one time that has now been removed. The box is a nice piece of folk art that is tastefully decorated and has withstood the abuses of time very well. It has a masculine look to it and would be a great gift for a father or new dad. There is lots of life left in it and you will enjoy using it.
