This wonderful comb case is just begging to be hung on the wall and prominently displayed. It is clearly a hand made item done by somebody with loving care. Pieced together with solid mahogany it measure 13 1/4 inches by 8 3/8 inches wide. It extends out approximately 2 ½ inches when hanging on a wall. The backing board is fret-cut into a Irish harp design with a cutout of a perched bird attached to the board at the base of the harp. The comb case front is attached to a triangular set of side boards canting the comb case for easy access. The front of the comb case is decorated with an organic shape inset into a overlaid board attached at the sides with leather strips and tacks. The case is attached to the backing board with early square-cut brads and reinforced with several newer brads. The whole piece with the exception of the reverse is protected with a layer of varnish. The condition is excellent. At one time the mahogany backing board split at several places but the splits were skillfully glued back together so that the piece is still strong. These repairs look to be very old and there is minimal evidence of the splits from the front. The comb case is also solid showing no signs of weakness. The rich patina of the wood, the wonderful design elements and the functionality of the piece all work together creating a wonderful one-of-a-kind item that will appeal to any serious collector. It would be a great reminder of old Ireland to hang on your wall.
