Carved Collapsible Fruitwood Victorian Letter Holder, Ca. 1900
The carving and design on this hanging collapsible letter holder is wonderful. It is probably carved from a fruitwood that has been left in its natural color. It is a dainty little item that has survived the years in remarkable condition. It is designed to hang on a wall and it has four slots for holding mail. Each slot can fold out of the way when not in use. The piece has a backing board with a carved design reminiscent of the folded linen design so often used on Victorian pieces. The four drop-down leaves intended to be used to sort and hold letters are each carved with an acanthus leaf motif. The condition is excellent. There are no cracks, chips or splits. The piece is totally sound and each letter slot leaf works as intended with no weakness appearing. The back is unfinished but the front has a wash layer of varnish that has added a small amount of color to the carved wood and has helped to preserve the wood over the years. It measures 10 ½ inches tall and is 5 inches wide. When open the letter leaves extend about 1 inches canted from the backing board. It is a wonderful and unusual example of Black Forest carved work.
