A good cabinet maker always kept a set of quality wooden planes. Frequently, he or she would decorate them with hand-carving to show their skill. This plane is one of those treasured pieces designed to show the carver’s art. We believe that this plane is from northern Europe, possibly either Germany or Norway, based on the construction and decorations. It is solid wood, except for the blade. Most likely the wood is maple or beech which has been stained and varnished for a wonderful finish and appearance. It measures 9 ¾ inches long, is 1 ¾ inches wide, and including the handle is 5 inches tall. The handle is inset into the body of the plane with a skillfully done sliding dovetail. The plane iron is old but probably a replacement piece. The wedge that holds the blade in place is chipped and is an early replacement. The sides of the plane and top are beautifully carved by a master carver. The left side has decorative elements along with the incised date "1824". The design on the right side matches the left and has the initials “OMNS”. On top of the plane, behind the handle there is a decorative carved heart. Some inactive insect holes are in the wood. This is a wonderful piece of folk-art from an earlier and simpler time when hand-craftsmanship was prized. It displays beautifully and will be a great addition to any collection of fine antique tools.
