This hand carved butter mold is made from five pieces of solid walnut with the four sides attached using early sheet brass hinges. The hinges are attached to the wood using round head tacks and some modern replacement screws. The sides are deeply carved with floral designs that are blocked into the center with linear elements. The bottom has two initials which appear to be “A” and “H” again surrounded by linear designs. We think it was made in the U.S. by a Norwegian immigrant, based on its similarity to other items with known provenance. It is clearly an early item judging by the hinges and style of carving. There is a nice overall patina that developed on the walnut over time. Condition issues do exist. One of the sides has completely split and has been rejoined using some brads and glue. There is a small amount of surface glue around the repair. There are several other areas that have splits in the wood but the splits are partial and the wood remains intact. Because of these condition issues, the piece has been priced accordingly. Still, for anybody who collects butter molds, this is a nice item with a great look and it would be a wonderful addition to any collection. It would look terrific mounted in a shadow-box frame hanging on a wall in your den.
