This is a hand made storage container that we believe was originally intended for holding butter. It consists of staved wood construction with twig banding as was often used on these primitive pieces. It also has a lid that is decorated with carving along with a pin lock intended to help keep the lid in place. The lock is inset into a piece of wood that is anchored into the lid with a sliding dovetail. As is true of farm primitives, this piece is not a refined item and has a wonderful charming look to it. At one time there was an additional band around the very top of the tub, but that is now gone. However, the remaining banding has kept the staves nice and tight. The wood shows the wear and tear of years of usage, adding to the look. It measures 5 1/8 inches long, by 4 ½ inches wide, and 4 ½ inches tall. There is an identifying set of 4 marks burned into the underside of the tube, but they are not readable. Based on the construction and design, we believe it is most likely English or Scandinavian. This is a nice piece to display in a farmhouse setting or even use on a desk or shelf to hold all sorts of detritus. However it is used, it will bring a smile to your face along with comments from others.
