This hand made storage container was originally intended for holding butter. It consists of staved wood construction with twig banding as was often used on these primitive pieces. It has a lid that is decorated with carvings along with a sliding pin lock intended to help keep the lid in place. The lock is inset into the lid in a sliding dovetail. This is not a refined item but is a functional piece and has a wonderful charming look to it. The banding has kept the staves tight over the years. The wood shows the wear of years of usage, adding to the look. It measures 5 1/8 inches long, by 4 ½ inches wide, and 4 ½ inches tall. There is an identifying set of 4 marks burned into the underside of the tube, but they are not readable. Based on the construction and design, we believe it is most likely English or Scandinavian. This is a nice piece to display in a farmhouse setting or use on a desk or shelf to hold all sorts of detritus. It will bring a smile to your face along with comments from others.
