This sweet little Black Forest carved hanging thermometer is a souvenir of Berchtesgaden, Germany. Berchtesgaden is a town located in the Bavarian Alps that is known for its appeal to outdoor enthusiasts including rock climbers and skiers. The thermometer is attached to an oval wooden plaque that measures 12 ¼ inches long by 4 ¾ inches wide. Attached to the plaque is a carved elk standing in front of a carved pine tree. It is all carved from linden wood and then stained walnut color as was commonly done to pieces of Black Forest carvings. The piece is all original including the thermometer. Although the thermometer still has its red alcohol in it, it does not seem to work. It is not clear why as the thermometer does not appear to be damaged. On the back is the original stamped metal eye used to hang it on a wall. The whole piece has been cleaned up and a coat of conservator’s wax was applied in order to maintain the finish. It is a nice little item that would look wonderful hanging on the wall of your cabin or library.
