This wonderful little stamp box is carved with edelweiss flowers and is a souvenir of Engelberg, Austria which is an alpine town in central Switzerland. It is done in the tradition alpine style which is often referred to as Black Forest. The box measures 2 7/8 inches by 2 1/8 inches and is 7/8 inches tall. The hinged cover is carved with the traditional edelweiss flower and foliage, has the name “Engelberg” scrolled across the lid, and has a delightful dentil style of border. The condition is good but there are the usual signs of age associated with old wooden boxes. The box has a small amount of warp to the wood so that the lid no long fits perfectly on the base. There is some separation due to the warp, about 1/64th inch, between the side and base which occurs at one corner. There is one small chip of wood missing, about 1/8th inch, from part of the rim design on the lid. There is a very small crack, about ¼ inche, on the back below one of the hinges. The crack is solid and has not weakened the box. Inside, the left side compartment is missing the small pieces of sloped wood that are used to help with the extraction of stamps. Other than these issues, it is a very nice looking item with a good finish and nice carving. You will love having this sitting on your desk.
