Dating from approximately 1900, this Black Forest carved desk box is a souvenir piece clearly labeled with the place-name Pilatus-Kulm. Pilatus-Kulm is a tourist region in central Switzerland and is known for the Hotel Pilatus-Kulm. Very possibly this box could have been purchased in that hotel long ago. Unlike many Black Forest boxes which are frequently badly warped with the hinges separated, this box has survived quite nicely. It measures a maximum of 4.75 inches long, 3.125 inches wide, and about 2.5 inches tall. The top has a nicely carved edelweiss/leaf design set on the lid and is surrounded by textured carving and oxalis leaves. Carved along the front edge of the top are the words "Pilatus-Kulm." The sides are grooved to add interest and a tactile element to the box. The lid has a very slight bow to it, but it still fits tightly into place when closed. The condition is very fine with no cracks or splits. The finish is still nice and bright. Overall, it is a box to be proud of. It is a wonderful item that is new to the market and will become a display piece on your desk or dresser that you will be proud to show off.
