This wonderful hand crafted bon bon tray is done in the Black Forest tradition. It has a music box in the pedestal stand. Whenever the tray is lifted, the music box starts to play. An early note is taped on the underside that indicates it is playing “Auld Lang Syne / Kommt ein Vogel geflogen.” The music box works and plays a tune. It is not, however, Auld Lang Syne, at least as we know it. Therefore, it must be assumed that it is playing Kommt ein Vogel geflogen. The tray measures about 11 ½ inches long by 9 ½ inches wide. When sitting on a table it stands about 3 inches tall. The carving is a rendering that appears to be a grape leaf. This would be consistent with the bunch of grapes that are located at the stem end of the leaf. The carving is very nicely done showing the details needed to demonstrate the theme. The condition of the tray is very good. The surface retains most of the original finish. There are a few minor scratches and dings that are consistent with age. The music box plays without any problems and has a nice sound. Overall, the tray has a very nice look to it and it should be a wonderful item to have available to either be used at your next gathering or added to your collection of Black Forest pieces.
