This quaint piece is a wall mounted match holder with a striker done to represent the man in the moon. It is made out of sheet brass that has been stamped into a circular disk. Affixed to the face of the disk are two stamped brass pockets for holding matches. Below them there is corrugated strip of brass that is intended for striking matches on. Contoured along the right side is a man in the moon image again made from a sheet of stamped brass. The man in the moon was washed with a light colored metal to produce a silvered look. The wash metal is probably zinc. (The whole piece was tested with a magnet to test for the presence of iron or steel. None is present.) The whole piece is 5 7/8 inches in diameter. The metal pockets extend approximately 5/8 inch from the surface of the metal disk. The condition of the piece suggests that it has had a long and useful life. The brass sheet disk is no longer perfectly flat. It has small ripples and minor bends from its years of use. The metal pockets and man in the moon also have minor bends. Some of the silvery metal has rubbed off of the man in the moon. The surfaces all have small areas of oxidation. This is a result of age and exposure to corrosive chemicals that were in the matches stored in the piece. The new owner might wish to polish the brass for a shiny look, but we feel that its present appearance adds much to the piece.
