If you like primitive folk art, then you are going to love this delightful hand-carved waterfowl bird bowl with a spoon tail. You can decide for yourself if it is a duck or goose. The piece is fairly large measuring a total of 12 inches long from the front of the bird’s beak to the back of the spoon/tail. It stands a total of 7 1/8 inches tall. The body is 6 inches wide. The top of the body including the head can be lifted up revealing a space that is carved out for storage along with a carved spoon that also serves as the “tail” when sticking out the back. The whole piece is nicely formed and decorated. There are two bead eyes on the bird. The neck and tail both have paint or dark stain applied to provide contrast with the rest of the body. Wings have been incised into the body and then texture was applied with a veining carving tool. It is in very nice condition. It has the usual scratches and dirt which are consistent with age and use. The lid has a small amount of warp due to age which causes it to rock slightly when sitting on the body. Some sections of the piece have been covered with varnish or possibly shellac, which is used to provide some emphasis to the design. It is a wonderful item that will look great sitting on a table and will certainly draw looks of wonder and inquiry.
