This wonderful chamberstick, or single stick candlestick, is done in the manner of “Goberg”. It dates from the Jugendstil era in Germany or Arts and Crafts era here in the U.S. The piece measures 7 1/4 inches tall and the round base is 5 ½ inches in diameter. In addition to holding a single candle it also has a place to store a box of matches. This is just the thing you need to have handy during your next power outage. It is in very nice condition. All of the riveted joints are tight and there are no significant bends or dings in the metal. It is coated with a thin layer of varnish that is original to the piece. This has served to protect the surface so that there is very little oxidation and it provides a dark chocolate brown color to the piece. There are a couple small areas where the varnish has worn through revealing the metal surface underneath. Overall, a very nice patina covers all of the surfaces. On the underside of the base there is a stamped signature for “Germany.” (The candle is not included.)
Hammered iron work is one of the characteristic art forms of the Arts and Crafts era. Goberg set the standard for such work and many tried to emulate his efforts. This chamberstick is such a piece. It has the traditional lines of a Goberg piece along with the craftsman quality of his work. It shows well and could be a great addition to your Arts and Crafts bungalow.
