At Sweetpea Cottage we tend to shy away from smoking items, but this piece was simply too good to pass up. It is an old box or humidor used for holding cigarettes or loose tobacco on a desk or table. It is styled to resemble a barrel right down to the details of the bungs on the end and top. It is hinged and latched so that the top half can swing back revealing the inside. It sits on four ball feet that are chrome-plated brass. The latch is also chrome-plated brass and still works perfectly. It measures 4 inches long from one end of the barrel to the other. The barrel is about 4 3/4 inches in diameter and the piece sits 5 inches high on a table with an added 3/8 inches for the bung on the top. The barrel is made from pieces of solid oak as are both of the ends. The wood has been stained dark and there are two black bands painted around the barrel. Inside the box is lined with a thin layer of veneer that looks to be cedar.
The condition of the piece is very nice. Outside there is minor wear and abrasion but no cracks or significant chips. Inside, the veneer has been chipped away in some spots and some of it is lifting up. Still, it would be quite usable as it is. While it could still be used for its original intended purpose, it would also make a wonderful box for holding small odds and ends on your desk or even a hand full of M and M's! You will not be disappointed with this item!
