This charming necklace came out of an estate where all the Indian Jewelry looked like it was from the 40's or 50's and this piece is no exception.
The artist used Hematite which is known for its strength, being a type of iron ore, sometimes with veins, which this one has gold veins. This is a very hard stone and the artist carved out tiny arrows, and inlaid them with turquoise. The arrow is on both sides and even across the mouth. These are hand carved and hand inlaid. The arrows are not precise, if you like perfection, this would not be for you. But if you are looking for a wonderful old one of a kind piece that has been hand (not machine) carved and inlaid this one is charming and would ware beautifully.
If you are familiar with hand carved fetishes you will see that the wobbles in the carving authenticate the hand carving. Please see fetishes on pueblo direct.
I have restrung this piece and added new sterling cones and hook and eye because it was on thread with a primitive sterling hook and eye and it did not look secure.
