WMF Crystal was established in Germany in the mid 1800's as Württembergische Metallwarenfabrik which was a metalworks factory and then in 1883 they branched out into crystal and glass studios. Many of their early pieces exhibit both metal and crystal together with elaborately designed decanters with metal handles and decorations added to the crystal. As with most German companies WMF suffered greatly during WWII but by the mid 1950's the company flourished again. During the 1970's-1980's the company moved into Scandinavian or German modernism in there design which is most likely when this set was made for it has the simple elegance found in these designs.
The pattern on this set of crystal is a simple vertical cut that is deep at the base of the cut and fades into a very slight etch by the center of the bowl. The crystal is elegantly thin and has a lovely ring tone.
