What an expression on his face almost human, I can almost hear him speak in a mans voice. I believe this piece dates to the early 1900's by the style of the carving and general wear. He is hand carved from one piece of wood and coated with wax, perhaps all the artist had to use. The wax has kept the color of the stain or wood very well, in the photos the flash shows the wood grain and color better almost like it was not stained but in natural light it is Very dark and you cannot see that. The wood looks like a Burl of some kind. I cannot find a signature, I see what looks like one on the bottom of the tail and you can see it in the photo but not with the eye or even a magnifying glass maybe because of the wax. Some styles of carvers are their signatures and if you look at his front paws there is one raised toe on each also I would think the nose is wonderful as well. Measures 14 1/4 inches high, 6 1/2 inches across base by 5 inches. No damages other than tip of an ear and some general dings all around.
