This switch padlock set is from the Kansas City Southern Railway. It is a "mixed marriage" (Adlake key and Slaymaker lock) but the lock responds smoothly to the key.
THE KEY is brass, stamped KCSRR on one side of its bow. On the other side is stamped ADLAKE and serial number 4655. It shows little wear and is in fine condition, darkening with age. There is no metal damage.
THE LOCK is stamped KCS on the shackle above the keyhole. On the other side of the shackle is stamped 1956. The maker SLAYMAKER "S with an arrow" logo is stamped in the dust cover above LANC. PA. U.S.A. (Slaymaker was located in Lancaster, Pennsylvania)
CONDITION of this lock is good -- all original, and with its original chain. There is darkening / surface grunge / and a little bit of a greasy feel on the body. There is light surface-only rust in a few spots. (We do not clean or tamper with the locks we sell!) The dust cover spring is very strong, it resists being pushed to the side and snaps back sharply over the keyhole when released.
IMPORTANT: (1) The clevis loop is fine but the pin is frozen (it DOES move when pushed hard so likely can be freed up). (2) The lock works readily with the key but has seen a lot of use -- the shackle does lock but not tightly (SEE OUR LAST PICTURE). When locked it will NOT open, but the shackle will pull out about an inch.
FROM WIKIPEDIA: The Kansas City Southern Railway Company (reporting mark KCS), owned by Kansas City Southern, is the smallest and third-oldest Class I railroad in North America (just behind Union Pacific Railroad and Canadian Pacific Railway) still in operation. KCS, which was founded in 1887, is headquartered in Kansas City, Missouri. It is currently operating in a region consisting of 10 central U.S. states. KCS also owns and indirectly operates Kansas City Southern de México (KCSM) in the central and northeastern states of México
