This good railroad switch lock set is from the Terminal Railroad Association of St. Louis (Missouri). Both pieces are stamped TRRA and were made by ADLAKE.
They make a great pair and work well together.
THE KEY is brass, stamped TRRA on one side of its bow. On the other side is stamped ADLAKE. It shows little if any use and likely is not as old as the lock. The TRRA has been overstamped but it is clear and legible. Condition is excellent with NO metal problems.
NOTE the rather unusual "lollipop" key cut, with a straight up-and-down opening.
THE LOCK is steel, painted blue. The loud blue color is a safety warning: Whatever this lock is securing must not be moved! TRRA is stamped on the back of the body, and a number 78 is stamped on the pin holding the shackle. It has what must be original chain attached.
Condition is excellent: the internal spring is strong, the dust cover over the key hole resists being slid to the side and then snaps back sharply over the keyhole. It responds very well to the key, opening and closing readily.
BACKGROUND: The Terminal Railroad Association of St. Louis (reporting mark TRRA) is a switching and terminal railroad that handles traffic in the St. Louis, Missouri, metropolitan area. It is co-owned by several Class I railroads that reach the city, including the BNSF Railway; the Canadian National Railway; CSX Transportation; the Norfolk Southern Railway and the Union Pacific Railroad. The TRRA structure allows them to share services, which otherwise each individual line would have to supply.
It was founded in 1889 in a deal orchestrated by Jay Gould with the Missouri Pacific Railroad; the St. Louis, Iron Mountain & Southern Railway (later part of the Missouri Pacific); the Wabash Railroad (later part of the Norfolk and Western Railway); the Ohio & Mississippi Railroad (later part of the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad); the Louisville & Nashville Railroad and the Cleveland, Cincinnati, Chicago & St. Louis Railway (later part of the New York Central Railroad).
