Here are five hat pins that belonged to my Grandmother, together with the paper bag containing them that my sister and I discovered among my mother's estate items.

Grandmother, who lived on Ford Street in Ogdensburg NY, almost certainly bought them from Frank's Department Store -- also on Ford Street -- a popular emporium founded in 1865 by Nathan Frank, whose son Julius, the city mayor, joined the business in 1890. Julius' wife, Marion Sanger Frank, was very active in the political family supporting and advocating for women's suffrage.

CONDITION: Please see our pictures! Three of the pins appear to have shiny, jet black heads; two are "matte" (not shiny) and may be bakelite but we are not sure. There is very light surface rust on all five, apparently from storage. The shafts of the longest pins are still blue. All are wonderfully sharp. The 6-1/4 inch long pin (the top one in our photo with the ruler) is slightly bent from use; the others are straight .

SIZE: The two longest pins are approximately 7 inches long; one pin is approximately 6-1/4 inches long; one is approximately 5-1/2 inches long; the fifth is approximately 4-1/2 inches long.

We are hoping these hatpins will be good additions to any collection of vintage hats from the early 1900s.
