This Chinese Export covered jar is just the perfect size - it is 7 inches tall and 7 inches in diameter through the thickest part of the middle. Its lid is 3-3/4 inches across the top and approximately 3/4 inch tall. The jar opening is approximately 2-1/2 inches.
We understand this is a rose petal jar, or possibly a ginger jar. It is very difficult to find these complete with their original lids.
PLEASE LOOK AT THE CLOSE-UP PHOTOS for detail and condition! The design is beautiful, a work of art rendering of earth tones, with a geometric band around the shoulder. Below the band, scenery wrapping around the body of the jar depicts mountains in the background, water and trees. On the bottom of the jar, which has a footed rim, is an apparent signature.
The glaze overall is in excellent condition, bright and shiny. There is light crazing in some areas, and the expected specks, pits and tiny defects inherent in Chinese export ware. The rim of the jar is perfect but the bottom of the lid rim has several old chips. This is a family piece inherited from great aunts, I am 71 and it has "always" been in the parlor of the 1847 homestead.
What a fine addition to any antiquities collection of Oriental pottery!
